Tracing the Legacy: Weaving the Memory of Exemplary Leadership of ITS’s 2nd Rector, Navy Colonel Ir. Marseno
As part of this momentous commemoration, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has organized a heritage journey, the outcomes of which include the publication of a biographical book on the second Rector of ITS, Navy Colonel Ir. Marseno Wirjosaputro. The book is entitled: Biography of Navy Colonel Ir. Marseno Wirjosaputro, Rector of ITS 1964–1968: Engineer, Soldier, Educator, and Entrepreneur.
This publication not only serves as a documentation of a leader’s personal journey but also as a reflection on a pivotal period in the institutional development of ITS. His leadership during the formative years of ITS marked a historic milestone that charted the course for the university’s enduring progress and achievements.
As an officer of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), Colonel Marseno assumed the responsibility of leading ITS with discipline, decisiveness, and profound dedication. He faced the formidable challenge of building a technical higher education institution amid limited infrastructure, scarce human resources, and a nation still in the process of shaping its identity. Through his vision, courage, and tireless effort, ITS successfully laid the foundational pillars of academic excellence, governance, and organizational culture—principles that continue to guide and benefit the institution to this day.
The publication of this biography, together with the exhibition collage and documentary video, stands as an expression of respect and remembrance for the invaluable contributions of ITS’s past leaders. The present generation can draw inspiration from his exemplary virtues—courage in decision-making, unwavering commitment to national progress, respect for the rights of others, and integrity in service. These timeless values remain profoundly relevant, and indeed increasingly vital, in confronting the complexities of the modern era.
