The Archives Unit of ITS, the Library and Archives Office of East Java Province (Disperpusip Jatim), and FKMSA hold a workshop on thematic archives

ITS Archives, in collaboration with the Library and Archives Office of East Java Province (Disperpusip Jawa Timur) and the Forum of Archive‑Aware Community Organizations (FKMSA), held a workshop on filing thematic archives at the ITS campus in Surabaya on Wednesday, 23 July 2025.

“Data and archives are the key and the fuel for AI. AI is not intelligent without valid archives and data,” said Imam Baihaqi, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Human Resources, Organization, Technology, and Information Systems at ITS, while opening the event.

He stressed the importance of archive management as a source of accurate information, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) and information disruption. According to him, every decision ideally should be based on valid data and archives so that the outcomes are on target.

The activity was attended by around 100 participants, consisting of students, archivists, and representatives from higher education institutions that are members of FKMSA, including ITS as the implementing organizer and host.

Acting Secretary of Disperpusip East Java, M. Arif Widodo, stated that archives are often only considered important when problems arise, so awareness of archive management must be continuously strengthened. “Archive management is a necessity for all institutions, even individuals. Unfortunately, it is only realized when problems emerge,” he said.

FKMSA Chairperson Yunus Abdul Halim added that digitalizing archives requires investment in adequate technology and equipment. He suggested that institutions begin building their own internal cloud services.

The workshop featured two speakers: Prof. Dr. Purnawan Basundoro, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Universitas Airlangga (Unair), and Susilo Dwi Atmodjo from Disperpusip East Java, who delivered material on presenting archives in the form of digital exhibitions.

The event lasted until the afternoon and was assisted by the Head of ITS Archives, Sri Lestari, and the Head of Unair Archives, Kiswari.
